  Alice May Yerkes

Alice May (Stewart) Yerkes, 75, died Thursday, January 21, 2010 at Frederick Mennonite Community, Frederick.

Alice May Yerkes was born in Philadelphia, PA on February 12, 1934 to the late Edward Oliver and Jean (Kaplan) Stewart. She was the middle child, having two brothers- Fred and Edward. Alice spent a good part of her life ministering to others as a practical nurse and later as a private duty nurse at Pine Hill Hospital, her favorite place to work. Alice mentioned the fellowship of the staff and the sharing in morning prayer with the nurses as fond memories. She then left nursing to start the Senior Citizen's Program at The Salvation Army, Citadel Corps in Phildephia. She became a soldier (member) of The Salvation Army church in 1972 and was especially influenced by Brigadier Walter Lamie, Major Marjorie Osman and Majors McEwen. One of her spiritual highlights was her appointment to Glen Eyrie, Colorado Leadership Training Seminar in 1976. Alice retired in 1997 after spending 20 years as the Director of the Senior Citizens Program. One of the former Corps Officers (pastors) there shared at this occasion that she was "one great lady"---kind, thoughtful, loving, compassionate, patient, and generous. Alice was involved in many aspects of the Corps from the organization of special dinners to her volunteer work as the Girl Guard chaplain and Sunday School Teacher. For the past 16 years she has lived happily at the Frederick Mennonite Community in Frederick, PA.
She is survived by two sons, Steven Andrew of Philadelphia, PA and Richard of Pottstown, PA husband of LuAnn, two granddaughters, Krista Yerkes, and Katie Scherf wife of Andrew Scherf, and a host of friends and acquaintances.
To those who knew her, Alice was a loving mother, grandmother and friend. Her faithfulness to God was evident in all that she was and did. Certainly her influence will last into Eternity!

A memorial service will be held in the Chapel of the Frederick Mennonite Community, 2849 Big Road, Frederick, PA on Friday, January 29, 2010 at 11:00 am. Burial will be private. There will be no viewing.

Contributions may be made in her memory to Frederick Mennonite Community "Benevolent Fund" 2849 Big Road, Frederick, PA 19435 or Salvation Army, Pottstown Citadel, 137 King Street, Pottstown, PA 19464.
