  W. Merrill Hook

W. Merrill Hook, 84, of Douglass Twp., Berks Co., husband of Phyllis (Kranch) Hook, died Tuesday at home on the farm where he was raised.

Born on October 4, 1925 in West Pottsgrove twp., he was a son of the late Wilbur M. Hook Sr. and the late Grace C. (Briner) Hook.

He was a graduate of Pottstown High School Class of 1943. Mr. Hook worked at the former Bethlehem Steel Co. and Stanley G. Flagg Co. during the winter months of the 1940's & 1950's and worked as a self employed dairy farmer year round until he sold his dairy cows in 1979. He then started working at the former Rosenberry Supermarket while raising beef cows and running his farm.
Mr. Hook was an avid baseball player and played up into his 40's for industrial and church leagues, and for a semi-pro team in Reading. He was nominated for the Pottstown Sports Hall of Fame, and was well known in the area for his skills at playing Short Stop.

He was an avid bowler, also playing for many church and industrial leagues.

Mr. Hook was a member of the Forties Gang and Buck's Boy's. He had been a member of Saint Andrew's E.C. Church Pottstown and most recently attended Mountain View Chapel for the last 20 years. He was the happiest in the later years at home surrounded by his family.

Surviving in addition to his wife with whom they celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on April 16, 2010, is one daughter Cindy wife of Stefan Dey, of Douglass twp., Berks Co. three grandchildren Jeremiah; Summer; Danielle; eleven nieces and nephews; fourteen great nieces and nephews; and thirteen great great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter Phyllis L. Hook; one sister Jean (Hook) widow of Dr. Rev. Max E. Nuscher.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 am on Monday May 3, 2010 from Mountain View Chapel, 61 Old Douglass Dr., Douglassville, PA. Officiating will be Reverend Christian Eshelman. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park, Pottstown. There will be a viewing on Sunday evening at the Schumacher & Benner Funeral Home & Crematory, 359 King St. Pottstown, from 7:00 until 8:30 pm. and on Monday at the church from 10:00 until 11:00 am.
