Continue reading below for some tips on dressing up for a funeral.

Wear Black or Dark Colors

Wear black or dark colors when you're unsure of what to wear and running out of time. Black and other dark colors are considered a go-to choice for funeral clothing. Black is a safe choice, but you can also consider wearing dark brown, navy, or grey.

A few outfit options are as follows:

  • dress or skirt with a plain blouse/top
  • jumpsuit
  • formal full-length trousers
  • blazer
  • closed-toe flats
  • heels
  • dark suits
  • formal trousers with a blazer
  • plain black tie
  • polished black dress shoes

The most important factor when putting your outfit together is to remember to remain respectful. If you have a perfect dress, but it's a bit too short, then consider pairing it with black tights to complete the look.

Dress Simply

You don't want to draw attention to yourself during this time. The funeral service is for the loved one who's passed and a time to celebrate their memory. For this reason, it's beneficial to dress simply.

Try to avoid wearing clothing that makes noise as you walk or brings attention to it, such as embellishments or sequins. Keep your outfit as simple as possible unless given specific instructions.

Dress Comfortably

You want to spend your time at the service focusing on all the beautiful stories and memories that friends and family share. You want to remember your loved one and celebrate their life during this time. The last thing you want to do is find yourself readjusting your outfit due to discomfort.

Do your best to dress comfortably to avoid any unnecessary outfit adjustments during the service.

Speak With the Family

If you're ever in doubt, then always respectfully speak with the family. Sometimes, families will ask that everyone wear a specific color to the funeral. This could be your loved one's favorite color or something similar.

Other times, families will ask that everyone avoid wearing black or dark colors and instead wear something bright and uplifting. In most situations like these, the family will make an announcement to ensure everyone knows about these specific requests.
