Elaine Muriel (Geiger) Huss

Elaine Muriel Geiger Huss, 95, of Sanatoga Ridge, Pottstown, PA, passed away on Friday, March 12, 2021, at her home.

Born in Gilbertsville, she was the daughter of the late John Russell Geiger, Sr. and Helen Jewell Weikel Geiger. The Geiger family, large and close-knit, enjoyed not only working together professionally but also volunteering at their local church, civic and Scouting organizations. Weekends often found the family gathering at the homestead for fellowship, Sunday suppers and holidays.

Elaine was a proud 1943 graduate of Boyertown Area Senior High School and was active in chorus, Junior Red Cross and the Girls Athletic Association. Even before graduating, she sang on the radio and performed for the injured and returning troops at Fort Dix, NJ during the war.

On January 1, 1946, She married the love of her life, Calvin Dewey Huss, whom she met in New York’s Penn Station during his time serving in the U.S. Navy in World War II. Elaine and Calvin raised their family in Pottstown; and she was employed at Milton’s clothing store, Lippman’s Jewelry Store, Arrow Camera Shop during their marriage. She held leadership positions in the PTA in Pottstown at several schools. She and Calvin were dedicated lifelong members of Trinity Reformed Church UCC. Elaine enjoyed singing in the choir for decades, did solo work for churches and in the community, and often sang duets with her sister Bertha.

Elaine loved nothing better than keeping tabs on her large extended family, spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and preserving family traditions.

She traveled domestically and internationally with her sisters and friends and for decades and prioritized a yearly vacation at Ocean City, NJ with her beloved siblings.

Later in life Elaine sold houses for E.J. Callahan Builders and in “retirement” spent hundreds of hours volunteering in both the Social Work Services department and Chaplain’s office at Pottstown Hospital. In addition, she used her talents in Pottstown School District’s Golden Sage Program. Faithfully, she continued to serve her church as President of the Consistory, organize the yearly church bazaar, co-found the senior group Trinitarians, and volunteer at the Tuesday community meals. At Sanatoga Ridge, Elaine served a term as President of the Resident Council, started the annual community picnic and created the Christmas Cradle charitable collection.

She is survived by sister, Bertha Geiger Rutter of Pottstown, PA; a brother, Roy A. Geiger, Sr. (Marie) of Boyertown, PA; her daughter Karen H. Clarke of Gilbertsville, PA;, son Richard C. Huss and daughter-in-law Karen Sue of Pottstown, PA; granddaughter Jennifer N. Clarke of Gilbertsville, PA, grandson James N. Clarke, Jr. (Roxanne) of Pennington, NJ, granddaughter Robin Huss Anderson (Robert) of Reading, PA and grandson Richard Michael Huss (Keena), five great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Calvin D. Huss, her brother, John Russell Geiger Jr., her sister Bernice E. “Bee” Lord, and her nephew John. R. Geiger, III.

Burial at Highland Memorial Park, Pottstown, PA will be private.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Trinity Reformed Church, 60 North Hanover Street, Pottstown, PA 19464.

Arrangements are by the Schumacher & Benner Funeral Home & Crematory, at 359 King St. in Pottstown, PA.
